An average person sweats up to a liter of fluid overnight, which creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Scientists estimate that there are about 1.5 million dust mites in your bed feeding on your dead skin cells and sweat.
Usually, the mites are not harmful, but their feces can cause dust allergies and asthma. This is why scientists suggest that you leave your bed unmade until you get back from work in order to expose the mites to sunlight which should eliminate them. Making your bed immediately after waking up will trap them inside and allow them to spread.
Scientist suggest leaving your bed unmade for at least an hour, but it’s best to make it after getting back home in the afternoon. After a day’s exposure to air and sunlight, most of the mites will be dead. There, now you have a scientific excuse for not making up your bed.
